Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread Prayer

God is great, And God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. By His hands we all are fed. Give us Lord our daily bread ... Amen.

Do you remember praying that prayer as a small child? Our daily bread ... How important bread is. No one ever coined the phrase our daily candy or our daily coffee.

Bread. It feeds us and gives us energy to go about our day.

Atkins and other fad diets cannot negate the 100's of scripture references to bread as life preserving...life sustaining... Bread is a basic food that people have received from the great creator for as long as man has been on the earth to keep them fueled up for the journey.

Jesus first used the phrase "Our daily bread" in what we call The Lord's Prayer.

  • Matthew 6:11 - Give us this day our daily bread.

  • Genesis 47:12 - And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father's household, with bread, according to their families.

  • Matthew 26:26 - And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat...

  • Genesis 18:5 - And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; Exodus 16:12 - I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

  • Exodus 23:25 - And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.

  • John 6:35 - And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

  • John 21:9 - As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. John 21:13 - Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.

  • Acts 2:46 - And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Acts 27:35 - And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

Our daily bread has much meaning.

If daily bread was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for us. Sorry Dr. Atkins. The words written here speak much to us about the value of bread in nourishing our bodies.

We can see by these Bible quotes that bread was a very important part of every day.  Think about the daily need we have for fuel for our bodies and how bread in one form or another seems to go with every meal...toast with breakfast, sandwich bread for lunch and rolls with dinner.
